Yes William, Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis) cool-season and can grow well in Northern Virginia climatic conditions. It has moderate heat tolerance and grows well in spring and fall, so summer heat in Northern Virginia will cause some dormancy but will revive in cooler weather. So, with proper mowing, irrigation, fertilization, and soil preparation, Kentucky bluegrass can provide a lush lawn for you.

Yes Russ, 2,4-D is effective for controlling maples and other brush around a pond, However take precautions to avoid contaminating the water and harming the fish populations. If it is the only method available, maintain a buffer zone of atleast 15-25 ft from the edge of the pond. Note even if 2,4-D breaks down fairly quickly in water, it poses a huge risk to fish if enough enters the pond. You may want to expore other alternatives that are labeled for aquatic sites/ friendly such as Glyphosate (Roundup),Triclopyr and Imazapyr(have lower toxocity) or a natural methods like girdling or removal of ring of bark around tree trunks.

Comment on 7 Best Barriers to Keep Cars off Grass + Stop Parking on Lawn by Joe Bethel https://lawnmodel.com/barriers-keep-cars-off-grass/#comment-15830 Thu, 25 Jan 2024 06:57:39 +0000 https://lawnmodel.com/?p=1136#comment-15830 In reply to Mo.

Hi Mo, i would suggest you consider having Ornamental grasses, large rocks/boulders, garden bed, gravel strip and may be add signage for visually defining the lawn edge rather that large shrubs or trees. This can work well to keep cars off your lawn. Compacted soil you may consider aeration(3-4 times) that may help and far way cheaper although it depends on the size of the lawn. DIY should be easy and straightforward wven if you have to hire an aerator. See this How to Aerate Lawn By Hand and How Often Should I Aerate Lawn?.

I live in the PNW and the street only has sidewalks on the side of the street. People got used to parking in our yard when original owners lived here. Since then we have been trying to get grass to grow in the front yard (too compact and can’t afford to excavate) and we put in a lovely front walk from the street. Still we have people parking and driving through our yard. I would like to plant something as a barrier between the street and the main part of the yard where we are trying to get grass growing. Because the soil is so compact, I was wondering if you thought plants may not be a good idea for visualization between street and yard. Thank you, wonderful artical.

Comment on How to Revive St. Augustine Grass and Get it to Grow Back by Joe Bethel https://lawnmodel.com/revive-st-augustine-grass-to-grow-back/#comment-5190 Thu, 16 Feb 2023 04:29:00 +0000 http://lawnmodel.com/?p=452#comment-5190 In reply to Richard Warden.

St. Augustine does hold well in fall and tends to hold on well into winter, especially when protected well by layers of leaves. However, it is affected by cold weather, more so the soil temperature. St. Augustine grass goes dormant (fall and winter months when the temperature drops)-it will turn brown and stop growing but will grow again in the spring when the temperature rises. In addition, pest and disease infestation can cause this too. More info would help

Sorry to hear so, Viktoria. You can get rid of crabgrass with tenacity (chemical option), or if you decide to use a natural method, go for baking soda. Here are a few guides that can help overcome crabgrass on the lawn.

I have this grass about for 2 years. First year it was beautiful, but this year there is crabgrass all over. I am not sure which product to use to kill just a weed not a grass. I can’t find good information about it
